If you have been unlucky enough to have suffered the loss of some vital data on a hard drive and have carried out some initial research into the costs of data retrieval, you will have encountered what is probably a fairly baffling range of prices offered by different data recovery companies. At the cheap end of the market you have the companies which will simply scan the drive that you send them with recovery software. Theirs is a volume-based business, they hope to attract as much business as possible, those drives which scan successfully they will get paid for and those that don’t be either sent back as unrecoverable or pass on to a specialist data recovery company (with of course are large price increase to the client). The trouble with this approach is that the initial scanning of the hard drive places the data on the drive in great peril. The chances of a full recovery been possible, even by specialist data recovery engineers, will greatly reduce after this failing hard drive has been hammered with data recovery software by personnel who are not properly trained in data recovery technique.
If your data is not too critical and your budget is such that only the cheaper options are tenable then of course this is the data recovery path to try. However it is important you understand the dangers to your data and of course if your data is critical you must go to a specialist data retrieval company in the first instance.
